About CJSW & the Funding Drive
Ahoy Matey! CJSW 90.9 FM is setting sail for our Funding Drive from October 19 to 26! Join our crew and support your FM Anchor - Calgary's only campus & community radio station. This year's campaign starts at 9:00am on Friday, October 19th and cruising until 6:00pm on Friday, October 26th.
This year, the Funding Drive celebrates CJSW 90.9 FM’s role as the flagship vessel of Calgary’s airwaves — your ‘FM Anchor’. We are the safe harbour, the beacon that guides listeners through the fog, the rising tide that lifts all boats.
So get out your semaphore flags and ring the ship's bell. We’re calling upon our savvy listeners to help keep our ship afloat. Together, let’s dig up that buried treasure and use it to help make the highest quality radio waves ever to wash over this magnificent community of ours.
Sail on over to cjsw.com or @cjsw for more information, and tune in to 90.9 FM to follow the adventures of the SS Wavebreaker and its crew of sailors on their quest for the buried treasure!
The Goal - $200,000
We need support from our listeners to help us keep afloat and make great radio waves 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. All of the money raised during the Funding Drive is used for the sole purpose of making great radio, as well as maintaining and operating our state-of-the-art studios and listener-friendly website.
In addition to helping with our operational costs, your support will help us invest in new equipment that will allow us to continue to make high quality radio both in our studios and out in the community. This includes digital DJ controllers for the on-air booth, upgraded backline gear for the 200+ acts that grace our studios with live sessions, and high fidelity audio recorders for more nuanced field recordings. We will also be upgrading our back-up transmitter in the unlikely event that our main 18,000-watt broadcast ship ever gets seasick.
Here are examples of the projects CJSW has completed over the years thanks to pledges from our listeners:
- 2010 — Moved into a brand new station space
- 2011 — Digitized our enormous music library
- 2012 — Wattage increased from 4,000 to 18,000 watts
- 2013 — Launch of the new cjsw.com website
- 2014 — All CJSW programs available through podcasting
- 2015 — Listeners can text directly to the on-air booth
- 2016 — McHugh House, our downtown venue for all-ages concerts
- 2017 — CJSW in the Wild live broadcast capabilities
About CJSW 90.9 FM
CJSW 90.9 FM is proud to be Calgary’s only non-commercial campus & community radio station. With over 100 shows in more than 10 languages, 7 staff and over 300 volunteers, we bring diverse voices from throughout the community to speak with passion about issues that are important to you each and every day. We increase the profile of local, independent artists and organizations by dropping their tracks, hosting them on our programs, and announcing their events. We tell stories that you won’t hear anywhere else, and we strengthen relationships among the arts, business, intellectual, and cultural communities and the audiences they are looking to reach.
CJSW 90.9 FM broadcasts out of Moh’kins’tsis (Calgary, AB) at the University of Calgary campus radio station located on Treaty 7 land. CJSW 90.9 FM would like to acknowledge the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. CJSW 90.9 FM would also like to note that the University of Calgary is situated on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and that the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Moh’kins’tsis”, which we now call the City of Calgary.
History of the Funding Drive
Funding Drive is CJSW’s most important fundraising event of the year. The money raised is directly responsible for the quality and consistency of service we are able to provide to the Calgary community throughout the year. Every year, for one week, we ask our listeners to invest back into the station and pledge their financial support for CJSW and for independent campus and community radio broadcasting in Calgary.
Our special Funding Drive programming airs for 24 hours a day for the whole week, starting with a special edition of Big Friday on the 19th, and ending with Road Pops on Friday the 26th.
CJSW’s Funding Drive is the most successful radio fundraising event of its kind in Canada. We’re proud to consistently raise the amount of money we need to keep our ship running smoothly. This strong support from listeners in Calgary and around the world has been a main contributor to the station’s success. Bottom line: Funding Drive is integral to CJSW’s operations, and listener support keeps our world spinning.
